In Santa Monica in the 1940s Nick Gabaldon, an African American, learned to surf at a segregated beach called ‘The Inkwell’. Everyday he defied the racial conventions of the time and paddled twelve miles north to surf Malibu, one of California’s most powerful waves.
Gabaldon pursued his passion to an extent most would never consider. His determination overcame not only the societal obstacles of the day but stroke after shoulder-burning stroke for 12 miles of open sea. We salute Nick Gabaldon. We stand by never accepting mediocrity. Never sitting back on one’s laurels. Always paying attention to the quiet, niggling voice in your head that says ‘it doesn’t feel right, it could be better’.
We salute going as far as you think you can. Then going twelve miles more.
